Some history
The Bunda Cliffs are reputed to be the longest cliff face in the world, and stretch in an unbroken line for 200 kilometres between Border Village on the WA / SA border, to the tiny township of Nullarbor (SA).
Note: the limestone cliffs are unstable, and there are no rails.
Things to see
- Between Border Village and Nullarbor there are a total of six clearly marked lookout points, along a stretch of 85km. Each has its own special interest but there are only two which are, apparently, truly breathtaking. From Border Village to Nullarbor, the lookouts go as follows: Lookouts #1 and 2 are a little different from the others - at this western section a narrow coastal plain with sand dunes and scrub separates the cliff face from the ocean. At lookout #3 apparently there is not much that can be seen. Lookouts #4 and 5 have magnificent views both to the east and to the west, and it is quite common to see seats on the rocks below and to hear their distinctive barking. At lookout #6 apparently there's not much that can be seen either.
- At Bunda Cliffs Scenic Lookout [665] there is a great view of the cliffs - the lookout is 600m off the highway. It is 75km down the road for us from last night's stop. Photographing them can be frustrating, as the 100m sheer limestone faces are often in shadow. Apparently further on, the best photos can be taken at Rest Area [663], and then the best chances are early or late in the day. I think these two Rest Areas must be the two lookouts people talk about from above.
